Almost every laptop has dedicated function keys on the keyboard. These are the same standard buttons, only special actions have been added to them: volume down / up, brightness up / down, mute, switch to an external monitor, turn on the built-in wi-fi and others.

Step 1
Check if the keyboard and touchpad drivers are installed. Go to the "Device Manager" and look at the wrong item. Often, the Windows 7 operating system selects universal drivers that do not support working with additional button functions.
Step 2
Go to the official website of the laptop manufacturer and find the downloads section. Download the driver for the keyboard and function keys. Install the program after checking the downloaded files with an antivirus. After downloading any files and installing them on a personal computer, you need to do a full scan of the computer for virus programs that could automatically integrate into the operating system registry.
Step 3
Restart your computer for the changes you made to the operating system to take effect the next time you log on to Windows. Test the operation of the buttons with additional functions by pressing the dedicated button. To use the special function of the buttons, find the Fn button on the keyboard - it is this button that activates the additional function of the key. Hold this button and press the function key to, for example, increase the volume of the system sound.

You can also find drivers and descriptions of how the function keys work in the materials on the disc from the laptop manufacturer. Install useful utilities from the disk, including a program for processing signals from function keys. It is also worth noting that drivers need to be installed for the touchpad, which completely replaces the mouse.
