Instructions
Step 1
It is assumed that this program will be installed initially. You can install both the entire Microsoft Office software package and some programs of this package, for example, Word, Excel, etc. After starting the program, open any text document, the number of characters of which you need to count, or create a new one and type a couple of lines of free text.
Step 2

Also, this action can be done much faster by pressing the keyboard shortcut alt="Image" + A + Q (English keyboard layout).
Step 3
The Statistics field will display the following parameters for your document: pages, paragraphs, lines, words, signs, signs, and spaces. You should pay attention to the item "Signs" and "Signs and spaces". Depending on what you need to know, you should choose the first option or the second.

At the very beginning, it was said about two professions whose representatives are most interested in this information. Most often, the customer requires to measure the size of the article in characters without spaces. This value corresponds to the "Characters" parameter.
Step 5
For Microsoft Office Word 2007, the above method of viewing statistics does not work. To display the number of characters in the text, just click on the "Number of words" item in the lower panel. In the "Statistics" window that opens, the required values are in the "Characters (without spaces)" and "Characters (with spaces)" fields.
Step 6
In some cases, it is required to find out the number of characters not of the entire text, but only of its parts, for example, a couple of paragraphs. In this case, you need to select one or several paragraphs and press the key combination alt="Image" + A + Q (MS Word 2003) or left-click on the corresponding value in the lower panel (MS Word 2007). Paragraphs can be selected in the standard way or by triple-clicking on the left side of the document.
