In case of problems in the operation of the Windows operating system, a special utility is used - "System Restore", however, there are situations when this utility becomes unavailable, in addition, the system itself cannot boot in any of its modes. In such cases, you can use console recovery.
Instructions
Step 1
Console recovery procedure consists in replacing the boot sector of the system disk.
Enter the BIOS of the computer, for this, press the Delete key while it boots. Install boot from CD-ROM. Insert the Windows XP installer disc into the drive and restart your computer. During the boot process from the disk, a menu will appear in which you must select the item "To restore Windows XP using the recovery console, press R". Press the R key.
Step 2
The system drive (usually drive C) will be detected and a message will be displayed
1: C: WINDOWS
Which copy of Windows should you sign in to?
Type 1 and press Enter, enter the administrator password (if set) and press Enter again.
Step 3
A command line prompt will appear
C: WINDOWS>
Enter the fixboot command i.e.
C: WINDOWS> fixboot
And press the Enter key.
You will be prompted to confirm writing the new boot sector. Type "y" and press Enter, then the boot sector will be written.
Step 4
The command line prompt appears again. Now enter the FIXMBR command. A warning will appear stating that writing a new MBR may result in the loss of access to all partitions on the hard disk. Type "y" and press Enter. A new boot record will be created.
This completes the system recovery. Enter the command exit, during the system reboot, enter BIOS by pressing the Delete key. Install boot from hard drive. In almost all cases, this method of recovery gives a positive result.
