In the Microsoft Windows operating system, the user can customize the "Desktop" to their liking. You can work with almost every element individually, setting new parameters for its display. If you need to change the appearance, size, color of shortcuts or labels on the "Desktop", follow a few steps.
Instructions
Step 1
Call the "Display" component. To do this, open the Control Panel through the Start menu. It can be displayed in a classic view or in a category view. Depending on this, select the component you want right away or find it in the Appearance and Themes category. In the latter case, you can also select any of the tasks listed at the top of the window.

Another option is faster. Right-click in any area of the "Desktop" free of folders and files. In the drop-down menu, select the last item "Properties" by clicking on it with the left mouse button. A new "Display Properties" dialog box will open.
Step 3
Users often encounter a problem when shortcuts on the "Desktop" seem to be outlined in a different color and stand out too clearly from the general background. To fix this, open the "Desktop" tab and click on the "Customize Desktop" button. An additional "Desktop Elements" dialog box opens. Go to the Web tab and uncheck the Freeze Desktop Items box.
Step 4
If you want to change the appearance of items such as "My Computer", "Network Neighborhood", "My Documents" and "Trash", go to the "General" tab and select the desired item. Click on the "Change icon" button and using the "Browse" button in the additional "Change icon" window that opens, specify the directory for the icon you need (for example, downloaded from the Internet). After specifying the path to the file, click OK.
Step 5
When finished working with the "Desktop Elements" window, click on the OK button in the lower right corner of the window to close it. In the "Properties: Display" window, click the "Apply" button. Go to the "Design" tab and click on the "Advanced" button. In the "Additional design" window that opens, use the drop-down list in the "Element" field to select the element that you want to change. For example, by selecting the Icon item, you can set the font size, style, and color for it.
Step 6
Having finished working with the "Additional design" window, click the OK button. In the properties window, click the "Apply" button for the new settings to take effect. To close the window, click the OK button or the [x] icon in the upper right corner of the window.
