Quite voluminous documents are often created using the Microsoft Office Word word processor, which is very inconvenient to navigate without page numbering. This application has a fairly easy-to-use function for adding numbers, which allows you to place them in different ways on the sheets of the document.

Necessary

Word processor Microsoft Office Word 2007 or 2010

Instructions

Step 1

Start a word processor and load the document whose pages you want to number. If you are just starting to create this document, please note that you will not be able to fully use the numbering functions until it is filled with more tea on one page. Another prerequisite for activating the necessary buttons in the program menu is working in the "Structure markup" or "Draft" mode. Buttons for switching modes are located in the lower right corner of the program window, next to the zoom slider.

Step 2

Go to the "Insert" tab and in the "Headers and Footers" group of commands, open the "Page number" drop-down list - it contains four subsections, each of which contains several options for the location of numbers on the pages. You can choose to place them, for example, at the top edge of the left or right, in the middle of the height of the left or right crop of the sheet, etc. After you make your choice, Word will number the pages, add another tab to the menu - "Working with headers and footers: Design" - and turn on the page number editing mode.

Step 3

Using the controls of the Position command group on the new tab, set the size of the indents from the edge of the sheet and from the text. Here you can also set different design of numbering on even and odd pages of the document, as well as special design of the title page number. To do this, first click on the "Options" button and check the boxes you need. Then go to the desired page (even, odd, title) and in the same drop-down list "Page number" - it is duplicated in the very first group of commands of this tab - select another version of the number design. You don't have to do this for each page separately - the choice for one even (or odd) page will affect all the other even (odd) ones, both existing and typed later. If you do not like the selected number placement option, you can replace it using the elements of the same “Page number” drop-down list.
