Step 1
To determine the video format by file extension, right-click on the video file and select Properties from the context menu that appears. The "Properties: File name" window will appear on the screen.

In the "General" tab, in the "File type" column, the video file type (format) and its extension are indicated. Here are the most common video formats: *. AVI (Audio-Video Interleaved) is a Microsoft container (semi-format) that can contain not only video and sound, but also text. *. AVI uses compression standards ranging from MPEG-1 to MPEG-4; *. WMV (Windows Media Video) is also a very common Microsoft format; *. VOB (Versioned Object Base) - MPEG-2 + audio format, intended for DVD-video; *. MOV (Apple QuickTime) - may contain, in addition to video, graphics, animation, 3D. Most often, to play this format, you need a QuickTime Player; *. MKV (Matroska Video File) - a container format that contains, in addition to video, subtitles. It is open source.
*.3GP / * 3GPP - video, usually shot with a camera of any device; *. FLV (Flash Video) - streaming video that is viewed in browsers. Basically, videos are distilled into this format for posting on the Internet; *. RM (RealVideo) - RealNetworks-format. This type of video is used to broadcast video reports over the Internet. Has a small resolution and low picture quality.

If we take the video standard as a “format”, then we can divide all video into two groups, each of which will contain two subgroups: The first group includes PAL and NTSC video. PAL has a resolution of 720x576 and a frequency of 25 frames / sec, NTSC - 720x480 pixels and 29, 97 or 30 frames / sec. The PAL format is used for displaying on TV screens in Europe and Russia, NTSC is used in the USA and some other countries. The second group is represented by analog and digital video. The VHS format (video tapes and cassettes) is responsible for analog video. Digital video is called DV (Digital video). This format has a low video compression ratio (5: 1) and provides high quality video recording.
