More often, a disk image is used to transfer the contents of a removable disk to another similar medium with the greatest possible accuracy. However, there is a class of programs that can imitate a disk reader in the operating system and use the image file itself as removable media. The procedure for creating such a virtual optical disk from an image file is called “mounting”.

Daemon Tools Lite program

Instructions

Step 1

Use, for example, one of the most popular virtual CD / DVD drive emulators called Daemon Tools to mount the disk image. Its free version of Daemon Tools Lite with an interface in Russian can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website - https://daemon-tools.cc/rus/products/dtLite. After installation, the program starts with the default settings when the operating system boots and places its icon in the tray (the "notification area" of the taskbar)

Step 2

Right click on the Daemon Tools tray icon and the program will show a context menu. Move the cursor over the section titled Virtual CD / DVD-ROM. Immediately after installation, the program creates one virtual drive, but later you can disconnect it. If there is only one item in this section ("Setting the number of drives"), it means that at the moment all virtual drives are disabled. In this case, move the cursor over this single item and select the line "1 drive" in the drop-down list. The program will display a plate with the words "Updating virtual images" for a few seconds, and when it closes, the operating system will be sure that the computer has one more optical drive.

Step 3

Right-click the program icon again, go to the Virtual CD / DVD-ROM section again and hover over the line starting with the words "Drive 0". In the drop-down list, you need to select the "Mount Image" command.

Step 4

In the dialog box that opens, find the file containing the desired disk image and click the "Open" button. It will take a few seconds for the program to mount the virtual disk in the virtual drive, and then what happens if a real disk were inserted into a real disk reader. Most often, the operating system finds an autorun program on the disk and the disk menu is displayed on the screen.
