Instructions

Step 1

As a rule, the desktop contains shortcuts to folders and files contained on local drives of the computer. How many shortcuts there will be on your desktop is up to you. Someone loves cleanliness and order - then the desktop contains a minimum of icons. Others are more important to get quick access to files, so their desktop resembles a minefield - one wrong click among many icons, and an unnecessary program will start. As a rule, there is no need for shortcuts for all programs installed on the computer. Leave the folders "My Computer", "Trash" and "My Documents" on your desktop, and add the rest to your liking.

Step 2

To move the icons of folders and files around the desktop, move the mouse pointer over the icon of the selected folder. Hold down the left mouse button and drag it to the desired location. To fix the icon in a new place, right-click in any free space on the desktop, select the "Refresh" command in the drop-down menu. To prevent the icons from returning to their original position on the desktop and being aligned, in the same menu, select the "Arrange icons" item and put a marker next to the line "Align to grid".

Step 3

Move the icons of frequently used programs to the quick launch bar. It is located to the right of the Start menu button. To add a program to the Quick Launch, simply drag its icon from the desktop to the panel. After that, the program shortcut can be removed from the desktop. To set the size of the quick launch panel, right-click on it, in the drop-down menu, remove the marker from the inscription "Dock the taskbar". Hold down the left mouse button and adjust the length of the taskbar. To do this, move the cursor to the right edge of the panel (slightly to the right of the extreme right icon), wait until the cursor takes the shape of a double arrow. After adjusting the size, dock the taskbar by returning the previously removed marker.

Step 4

To change the standard icons of folders such as "My Computer", "My Documents", "Recycle Bin", "Network Neighborhood", right-click in any free space on the desktop, in the drop-down menu select "Properties" - the "Properties" window will open: Screen". Go to the "Desktop" tab and click on the "Desktop Settings" button. In the window that opens, select the icon you want to change and specify the path to the new icon. To change the icon of any other custom folder, right-click on it, select "Properties". In the window that opens, go to the "Settings" tab, click on the "Change icon" button and specify the path to the new icon. Click the "Apply" button, close the properties window.

Step 5

From the "Properties: Display" window, you can also change the theme of folders and buttons, set a new wallpaper on the desktop, select a screensaver for the time when the computer is turned on, but no one uses it, adjust the screen resolution. Navigate through the appropriate tabs in the properties window to customize your desktop to your preference.
