In the Windows operating system, virtual memory is concentrated in the so-called paging file, more precisely in the pagefile.sys file. If the computer makes full use of all available resources, then it's time to think about increasing virtual memory.
Necessary
Personal computer with Windows OS installed
Instructions
Step 1
From the Start menu, find and launch the Control Panel applet. Then click on the shortcut with the name "System". After that, in the window that opens, select the "Advanced system settings" tab.
Step 2
Then click the Options button in the Performance section. Following this, click on the "Advanced" tab. The screen will display a section titled "Virtual Memory", which indicates the current size of the virtual memory and provides the ability to configure it.
Step 3
Click the "Change" button. In the window that opens, select the system partition (usually drive C) and select it.
Step 4
There are three commonly known options for configuring virtual memory. In view of this, select the most suitable option for the hardware data of your personal computer: "Specify size", "Size as selected by the system", "Without paging file". Increasing virtual memory boils down to manually entering the original size and the maximum allowed virtual memory size in megabytes.
Step 5
Set a custom virtual memory size (original and maximum). Please note that the maximum size must be twice the total amount of your physical memory. For example, if the system has 2048 megabytes of physical memory, then set the initial size to 3070 megabytes, and the maximum size to 4096 megabytes.
Step 6
There is an option to install virtual memory at your choice. To use it, click on the "System selectable size" tab.
