Editing any file begins with loading it into the program, in which the creators have laid down the functions of making changes to files of this particular format. Each of the editor programs has its own individual interface and therefore the same operation can be performed in different ways, depending on the ideas of its creators about usability. However, there are universal rules that most editor manufacturers of all kinds adhere to.

Instructions

Step 1

Open the editor program and press the key combination CTRL + O. These "hot keys" are used by the absolute majority of programs to launch a standard file search dialog and load them into the editor. This keyboard shortcut, as a rule, duplicates the "Open" item placed in the menu, which should be found in the "File" section.

Step 2

Find the file you want to load into the editor using the open standard dialog. To navigate the structure of disks and directories in your computer and connected network resources, it usually uses a drop-down list next to the "Folder" inscription - it is located at the top edge of the file open dialog box. There is also an alternative way to get to the desired file in the standard dialog - enter the full path to the required file copied somewhere (for example, in the address bar of the Explorer) in the "File name" field.

Step 3

Click the "Open" button after the required file is found. Some editors add additional options to the standard dialog - for example, in the graphics editor Adobe Photoshop, you can see the thumbnail contained in the selected file. This helps ensure that the correct file is selected even before clicking the "Open" button.

Step 4

There are other ways of opening files that are universal for most editors - for example, almost all modern editors support dragging and dropping files from the window of one program to the window of another. This allows you to find the file you want using Explorer and drag it into the open editor window. You can drag the desired file from the desktop into the editor window.

Step 5

During installation, many editors put additional items in the program menu that relate to the types of files that editor works with. Therefore, for example, having installed the HTML editor, you can find the item "View in HTML editor" in the browser menu, which will automatically launch this editor and load the file opened in the browser into it. The same items are added by the editor programs to the context menu of Windows Explorer, so to load a file into the editor, it is enough to right-click it and select the item with the name of the editor.
