Step 1
You can change the icons using specialized programs (for example, SP Shell icons, IconForge or JD Icons), and the available Windows tools. The system has a large set of icons that you can use. If you haven't found suitable icons among the standard set, download them from the Internet. Thanks to the sheer number of icons already created, this is not a big deal. In Windows, only ico files can be used for shortcuts. If you need to convert any image into an icon, use the Icon Empire program. It's free and easy to use. Use it to convert the desired graphic format file into an ico format icon.
Step 2
To change the icon for an individual shortcut, right-click on it. In the context menu that opens, select the "Properties" item. Open the "Shortcut" tab and click on the "Change Icon" button. A window with a standard set of icons will open. Select the desired one or specify the path to the folder with the downloaded icons. Click the "Open" button, then Ok. Save changes by clicking on the "Apply" button. The icon is set.
Step 3
If you need to replace icons for a specific file format, follow these steps. Open the "Start" menu and click on the "Control Panel" shortcut. In the window that opens, select the "Appearance and Themes" submenu. At the bottom of the window you will find the "Folder Options" item, click on it and go to the "File Types" tab. In the tab, you can create your own extension or change the file association for existing formats. Select the format you want to change the icon and click the "Advanced" button. In the window that opens, click on the "Change icon" button and specify the path to the desired icon file. Click the Ok button and apply the changes.
