Disk icons in Windows cannot be changed in the usual way for other types of icons. To do this, they often use special programs designed to change various components of the graphical interface of the operating system. However, the OS itself provides a simple mechanism with which you can change the disk icons.

Instructions

Step 1

Start by preparing an icon for the operating system to replace the standard disk icon. You can pick it up on the net or draw it yourself, but in any case, the image must be saved in an ico file. If the picture you need has a different extension, then use the format converters. It can be a resident program, an additional plug-in for your graphics editor, or an online service - it is not difficult to find such on the net.

Step 2

Open Windows Explorer - double-click the My Computer shortcut on your desktop. If the display of this shortcut is disabled in the settings of your operating system, then use the WIN + E hotkey combination assigned to this operation (this is the Russian letter U). Or you can open the main menu on the "Start" button, click the "Run" item, type the command explorer and press the Enter key.

Step 3

Using the explorer, find the prepared file with the disk icon in ico format and copy it - select and press the CTRL + C keys. Then click on the disk you are interested in in the left pane of the explorer and paste the copied file into its root directory, that is, just press the CTRL key combination + V.

Step 4

Expand the "File" section in the Explorer menu, go to the "New" subsection and select the "Text Document" item. This same menu can also be accessed by right-clicking a free space in the right pane of Explorer. In any case, this way you will open a text editor that will automatically create a new document.

Step 5

Type two lines of instructions: [autorun]

icon = icon.ico Instead of icon.ico, use the name of the file copied to this folder with the image of the new disk icon. Save the document with the name autorun.inf in the root folder of the drive - in the same place where the icon file is already located.

Step 6

Restart your computer and the icon for this disk will be replaced with the new one. In the same way, you can change the labels for other disks by placing the same picture there or preparing a personal icon for each disk.
