Instructions

Step 1

In the NTFS (New Technology File System) file system, OS security is ensured at the file level. For this purpose, special access control lists (ACL - Access Control List) are placed in each folder of any of the computer disks. They list user groups and individual users who are allowed access to this folder in general or to specific files in it. It also lists the actions allowed for these groups or users. The operating system has granular and lightweight ACL control modes. Switching between modes is carried out by setting the checkbox "Use simple file sharing" in the OS settings. To prohibit access to files of any folder on your computer, first in the main menu (the "Start" button), in the "Settings" section, select "Control Panel ". In the panel that opens, launch the "Folder Options", go to the "View" tab and disable (uncheck) the "Use simple file sharing" option. Commit the change made by clicking the "OK" button.

Step 2

Now open Windows Explorer by double-clicking the My Computer icon or CTRL + E and navigate to the folder you want to close.

Step 3

Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the context menu. This action will open the folder properties window in the Access tab. If you want to deny network access, then check the box "Stop sharing this folder".

Step 4

Users and user groups are listed on the Security tab of the same folder properties window. You can adjust in detail the rights of each group or user - from a complete prohibition of access to the contents of a folder, to absolute and exclusive rights to any actions with files. To do this, select the desired user (or group) in the upper list, and in the lower list put a checkmark in the “Deny” or “Allow” columns opposite the corresponding type of action. After finishing editing user rights, commit the changes by clicking the "OK" button.
