Currently, in specialized stores you can easily find a ready-made patch cord for creating a local network. But there are also cases when you cannot find one or the cable is not long enough. What to do? In this case, we crimp the network cable ourselves.

Necessary

  • Twisted pair cable
  • 2 RJ-45 plugs
  • Crimping pliers (a thin flat-blade screwdriver can be used, but highly discouraged)
  • External insulation stripper (stripper or sharp knife)

Instructions

Step 1

First, decide what type of crimp you need Straight-through or Crossover. A direct crimp is usually used to connect a computer and a switch, and a cross crimp is used to connect two PCs (although most modern network cards are able to "turn over" the cable on their own and a direct crimp will do, but you should be on the safe side).

Step 2

For a straight crimp, take the cable and strip off the top insulation on both sides at a distance of 3 cm from the edges. Next, we compose small colored wires in a row in the following sequence from left to right: white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown.

Step 3

Tightly squeeze the colored conductors to secure them in this sequence and remove the excess, leaving 1 cm unbraided. Take the RJ-45 plug with the latching device down and carefully insert the cable so that the untwisted wires reach the end of the metal pins of the plug, and the cable sheath to the intended for it latches.

Step 4

Recheck the correct sequence of colored wires and insert the plug into the crimping pliers as far as it will go and press firmly. Make sure that the pliers are not skewed during crimping, this can lead to a defect in contact. A messed up sequence of colored wires will result in loss of data and an inoperative network.

Step 5

Pull the other end of the cable in the same way. With straight crimp, the sequence of colored conductors at both ends of the patch cord is the same

Step 6

For cross crimps, do the same with one single exception. We crimp one end of the cable as described above, and in the second we change the sequence of colored conductors to the following: white-green, green, white-orange, blue, white-blue, orange, white-brown, brown.
