Sometimes you have to face unexpected difficulties during a rather simple file overwrite operation. Several correct options for the sequence of actions when replacing a file are described in detail below.

Instructions

Step 1

If you need to overwrite a regular file that is not part of the operating system, then you can do it this way. First, open standard Windows Explorer by pressing CTRL + E or by double-clicking on the "My Computer" icon.

Step 2

Navigate the folder tree in the left pane to the location where your new file is stored, select it and copy it to RAM. This can be done by pressing the CTRL + C keyboard shortcut, or by right-clicking the file and selecting the corresponding item in the context menu.

Step 3

After that, navigate the folder tree in the left pane of the explorer to the location where the file you want to overwrite is stored. If its storage location is unknown, then in the main menu (on the "Start" button) in the "Find" section, select "Files and folders", in the search window that opens, type the name of the desired file and click "Find".

Step 4

When the file is found using the search dialog or in the explorer, select it and insert the replacement file contained in RAM. You can do this by pressing the keyboard shortcut CTRL + V or by right-clicking and selecting the appropriate item from the context menu.

Step 5

If the operating system displays a message about the impossibility of overwriting the file, then, apparently, the file at this moment is being used in the work of any of the application programs. After closing the program, re-insert the file. If it is not possible to close the program in the usual way, then repeat the entire procedure after restarting the computer in safe mode.

Step 6

If you need to rewrite a system file from the current operating system, then you need to act in a slightly different sequence. But first, as in the previous version, open Windows Explorer by pressing CTRL + E, or by double-clicking on the "My Computer" icon.

Step 7

Navigate the folder tree in the left pane of the explorer to the location where your new file is stored, select it and copy it into memory, as described in the previous method.

Step 8

As in the case of a non-system file, navigate through the folder tree in the left pane to the file you want to replace, or find it using the Files and Folders search dialog from the Find section of the main menu (on the Start button).

Step 9

Right-click the file found in Explorer or in the search dialog and select Properties from the context menu. In the file properties window on the Security tab, click the Advanced button.

Step 10

In the window that opens, on the "Owner" tab, in the "Change owner to" list, you need to select your login line. Then close both open dialog boxes by clicking OK.

Step 11

After the change of ownership, paste the file from RAM by pressing the CTRL + V keyboard shortcut or by right-clicking on the file and selecting the appropriate item in the context menu.

Step 12

If the system displays a message about the impossibility of this operation, then, apparently, at this moment the file is being used in the operation of the OS. To terminate its work forcibly by pressing the alt="Image" + CTRL + Delete keys, start the task manager, find the required process on the "Processes" tab, select it and click "End Process". If you cannot close the program in this way, you will have to replace the file after rebooting in safe mode.
