An optical laser is used at the heart of a modern DVD drive, so it is not surprising that this device often fails due to mechanical reasons. The drives are now relatively inexpensive, and almost everyone, even a little computer-savvy, can install a new drive.
Necessary
- - computer;
- - dvd drive.
Instructions
Step 1
Remove the side covers of the system unit and remove the old drive. Disconnect the wires going to it from the power supply and the motherboard, carefully unscrew the bolts and slide the drive forward out of the case. It pulls out quite easily. Loosen all bolts carefully and be careful not to lose them.
Step 2
Install the new drive in place of the old one in the same way. Before installation, check which connection connectors the new DVD drive has. If your old drive was IDE and you purchased a SATA device, check if there are SATA connectors on the motherboard and power supply. Take a close look at the internal contents of the system unit on your computer. Usually, a small installation manual is included with new components. Insert one end of the ribbon cable into the connector on the newly installed drive and the other into the corresponding socket on the motherboard. Connect the wires from the power supply to the drive.
Step 3
Replace the side covers of the system unit and tighten the bolts. Connect all wires to the system unit and start the computer. Check if the motherboard detects a new device. To do this, go into the BIOS by pressing the Del key on the keyboard at the beginning of the computer boot. Usually Del has to be pressed several times in a row until the BIOS menu opens.
Step 4
After the operating system has loaded, launch the Device Manager application. Check if a new drive is installed in the system - there should not be items with question or exclamation marks in the list of devices. Check the operation of the new drive by reading the information from the disk. Replacing a DVD drive takes no more than 10-15 minutes.
