The Microsoft Office software package has long become the standard for the design of various documents. Abstracts, reports, theses - they are all done in Word, one of the electronic office programs. And of course, the document cannot be without order. This means that you need to set the page numbering, and, preferably, not manually.

Instructions

Step 1

Find the item "Insert" in the menu bar and click on this inscription. In the drop-down menu, left-click on the line "Page numbers". A dialog box will open in which you can configure options for adding numbering. This feature works in Word 2000, 2003 and XP. In newer versions of the office suite, a different principle of arrangement of control elements is used. But the general algorithm for setting the numbering remains the same.

Step 2

Select the position of the page number on the sheet from the drop-down list. Options are offered at the top or bottom of the page. You just have to define and indicate the desired menu item.

Step 3

Specify how exactly the page number digits should be located. The three most popular options are From Center, Left and Right. Depending on your choice, the page number will be in the center of the sheet, in the left corner or in the right corner. For brochure layouts, there are two options: inside and outside. They mean that the numbers will be mirrored from each other in one or another part of the pages. This is very useful when creating complex documents. A schematic representation of the sheet is displayed in the same window to visually show how the pagination will look like.

Step 4

Check or uncheck the "Number on the first page" box. This is useful if you are typing a document with a title page. If you check this option, then you will not see the number on the first page, but it will be counted.

Step 5

Click the Format button to access additional numbering customization options. Select a pagination method from the drop-down list in the top menu. These can be regular Arabic numerals, uppercase or lowercase letters, and Roman numerals.

Step 6

Enter the page number if you need to continue the numbering from some value. This is very convenient when the document consists of several files: specify the number from which the counting should be continued and the program will insert the necessary numbers by itself. This method is also necessary when you need to correct only a few pages and insert them into a common binder without disturbing its order and numbering.

Step 7

Check the box next to Include Chapter Number. Then you can insert not only the page number, but also the name of the section to which it belongs. You can choose several options for displaying page and chapter numbering, with different delimiters, from hyphens to commas.
