Movies in MKV format are common on the Internet. The MKV media container is popular for its versatility (it is capable of containing video and audio in many formats). For watching videos on a computer, the MKV format is a great option. But in order for such a file to be read, for example, on a household DVD or HDTV player, you need to convert MKV to another format.

Instructions

Step 1

There are many programs, both paid and free (freeware), for converting video formats and transferring video from one type of media container to another. A variant is possible in which separate utilities work with the contents of the MKV container (video and audio tracks), and then, with another program, all this is collected into a single file of the required format. But you can use one program and do all the work at a time. Among such programs are Any Video Converter, ConvertXtoDVD (convert formats to DVD), MKV2AVI (converts only to AVI), WinAVI All One Converter, Total Video Converter, Format Factory. Different programs may have their limitations, so be prepared for some loss in picture or sound quality.

Step 2

An example of converting MKV to AVI in the popular Format Factory converter. This program is distributed free of charge and is quite versatile. Install and run Format Factory. Select the folder where the converted files will be placed (click "Destination folder" and specify the directory). On the left side of the tab, select All to AVI. A new window will open. Click the "File" button and find the video you want to convert.

Step 3

Click "Configure" if you want to specify the codec, video resolution, bit rate, audio parameters, subtitles, watermark, etc. There you can also specify the desired quality (video (high, low). If you want to keep the parameters of the original video, do not change anything. Click OK. When everything is ready, click "Start" in the main window. Transcoding will begin. This may require a different amount time, depending on the file size and the specified parameters of changes. If necessary, write the resulting video file to disk.
