The SDHC memory card format is specially designed for use in various portable devices. Often after buying a new card or while using an "old" card, it becomes necessary to format it in order for it to be fully usable.

Instructions

Step 1

To start the process, connect the SDHC drive to your computer using a card reader or, perhaps, your unit has a special slot for reading SD cards directly. The card should be successfully detected by the computer as a data storage device. If an icon with a new disk name appears in the My Computer folder, then everything is in order.

Step 2

Determine for yourself which file system you want to use. The most common file systems are NTFS and FAT32. There are other types as well, but they are less commonly used and are not supported by all devices. It is recommended to format SDHC cards in FAT32 system as it is more versatile.

Step 3

Go to "My Computer" and right-click on the line with the name of your drive, then select "Format" from the menu that appears. Then determine which file system you want to format the device to. Check the "Quick Format" box and then click on the "Start" button. Wait for the formatting to complete successfully. The computer will display a window with a corresponding notification.

Step 4

You can also format the SD card using special programs rather than operating system tools. Some manufacturers develop separate utilities for their drives.

Step 5

Or use the universal SDFormatter program. It has a user-friendly interface and is distributed free of charge.

Step 6

After finishing work with the card, select the "Safely remove hardware" option. Its icon is in the tray (the right edge of the taskbar). Click on the corresponding icon and select "Eject removable disk" in the window that appears. Then you can physically remove the memory card. You can disconnect the drive without safe removal, but there is a risk of damaging it or the data on it (if you managed to write something).
