Instructions

Step 1

Determine what is meant by the root folder in your specific context. In the general case, the root directory can be considered the one inside which all other subdirectories are placed, i.e. located at the highest level of the folder hierarchy. For example, the root directory of the C drive in Windows OS will be the folder with the address "C:". But if we are talking, for example, about a game installed in a folder called WoW, which is located inside the games folder on the C drive of your computer, then the root folder of the game will be the directory with the address C: gamesWoW. Similarly, the addresses of the root folders in depending on whether we are talking about the root directory of a web server, or your account on it, or one of your sites on this account.

Step 2

Start Windows Explorer if you need to open the root folder located on one of your computer's disks, external media connected to it, or local network resources. This can be done by pressing the WIN + E key combination or by double-clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop. You can open the required root folder by sequentially expanding the directory tree in the left pane of Explorer. If we are talking about any of the disks, then by clicking the corresponding icon in the left panel, you have already completed the task of opening its root directory. And if you know the address of the desired folder, then instead of moving through the directory hierarchy, you can type it (or copy and paste) directly in the address bar of the explorer and press Enter.

Step 3

Launch FTP client or hosting provider file manager if you need to open the root folder of your account on the server. In the FTP client, you need to connect to the FTP server using the address, login and password provided by the hoster. And if you used the file manager, it means that you have already logged in and connected to the FTP server through the web interface of this program. To go to the root folder of your account, successively go one level up, as long as possible. The server settings will not allow you to rise above the root directory of the account, therefore the last of the folders available to you will be the root. If you use any of the public content management systems (for example, UCOZ), then opening the file manager you immediately find yourself in the uppermost in the hierarchy available on your site folders. This is its root directory.
