A format is a way of recording information, visual, audio, textual or otherwise. Depending on the format, the computer interprets the files as graphics, audio, video, text documents, or others. To open files of different formats, different programs are used, in accordance with the individual settings of the computer.
Instructions
Step 1
Highlight the file in which you want to define the format. Review his name. After the original name (for example, "Practice Report") there may be a period, followed by three or four letters of the Latin alphabet without a space:.doc,.docx,.jpg, jpeg,.mp3,.wav, etc. This is the file format (text, graphics, sound, etc.).
Step 2
If there are no such letters, take the file and drag it into the open browser window. It will either automatically "download" it to your downloads folder, or prompt you to do so. In the first case, you can see the format in the "Downloads" tab (the same three or four letters after the name), in the second case, the format will be displayed in a dialog box with a proposal to save the file ("You are going to open the file" Name.docx "…").
Step 3
The file icon may give you a guess about the format - it usually displays the default editor for files of that format.
