Instructions

Step 1

Space refers to hidden formatting characters, in fact it is an independent printable character, it takes place in the document. If you have set to hide these invisible characters, you will only see the empty space between words. At the same time, it is not always possible to determine by eye how many spaces there are in the text - one or more.

Step 2

To know where to remove extra spaces, make the formatting characters visible. To do this, open the "Home" tab and click on the button with the "¶" symbol in the "Paragraph" group. In the document, all spaces will be marked with a "•", it is not printed, but it facilitates orientation in the text.

Step 3

Place the cursor after the extra space and press the Backspace key - the space will be removed. Alternatively, place the cursor in front of the extra space and press the Del key. These methods are suitable if you are editing a small piece of text. It is better to use another method to remove spaces in a large document.

Step 4

Select a piece of text or an entire document. Click the Home tab and find the Editing section. Click on the "Replace" button. In the window that opens, make sure that the "Replacement" tab is active. Enter multiple spaces in the Find box, and only one in the Replace With box. Click on the "Replace All" button.

Step 5

Be careful, spaces in the replacement window are not indicated in any way. If there are double spaces in your text, put two spaces in the "Find" window, if there are triple spaces - three, respectively. You may need to repeat the action several times for a different amount of extra spaces.

Step 6

After executing each command, the Word editor notifies you how many replacements have been made in the text. When you're done replacing multiple spaces with a single one, close the Replace window. You can evaluate the result by turning on the same mode of displaying paragraph marks and other hidden formatting characters.
