To install multiple operating systems, conveniently sort files and increase the degree of safety of important information, hard drives are divided into partitions. There can be many reasons, but it is important to know exactly how the disks should be divided.

Step 1
Let's consider a situation when you just bought a computer without an operating system and want to partition the hard drive into disks. A fairly simple way to do this is to partition your hard drive during the installation of Windows Seven or Vista.
Step 2
Turn on your computer and insert the Windows installation disc into the drive. Press the F8 button. You will see a menu for selecting devices. Move the pointer to the DVD drive and press Enter. Begin the process of installing the operating system.

At some point, a list of hard drives will appear on the screen. Select the hard drive that you want to partition and click the "Disk Setup" button to display an additional menu. Click the Delete button.
Step 4
Now click the "Create" button. A window will appear on the screen in which you need to specify the size and type of the file system of the future logical disk. Perform this operation.
Step 5
Repeat the previous step until you have the desired number of logical drives. Select the one on which you plan to install the Windows operating system and click the "Next" button.
Step 6
After the OS installer completes, open My Computer and make sure you have the correct number of partitions on your hard drive.

Much more often there are situations in which you need to split the hard drive into disks after installing the operating system. For such cases, there are special programs. Let's take Partition Manager as an example.

Install the program and restart your laptop or computer. Launch Partition Manager and go to the Quick Partitioning menu. Check the box next to the "Advanced user mode" and click the "Next" button.
Step 9
Specify the hard drive or its partition that you plan to partition into disks and click the "Next" button. Select the file system type and set the size of the future partition. Click the "Apply" button to start the partitioning process.
