Very often, a large hard drive needs to be divided into two or more parts in order to install the operating system on one of the parts, and store the necessary files on the others. Partitioning the C drive can be done in different ways, depending on the operating system installed on the computer.

Step 1
The hard disk can be partitioned directly during system installation. During the installation of Windows, the program will ask you where to install the operating system. If the hard disk has not been partitioned before, then by means of the installer it can be divided into the required number of parts. To do this, first determine the size you want for the C drive, and then allocate the rest of the hard drive by partitioning it. The newly created partitions can be immediately formatted in the desired file system.
Step 2
If the operating system is already installed and Windows 7 or Vista is present on the C drive, then the hard drive can be partitioned using standard OS tools. To do this, open the "Start" menu, and right-click on the "My Computer" line. In the menu that appears, select the "Control" button. In the window that appears, go to the "Disk Management" section. Right click on the disk you want to partition and click "Shrink Volume …". In the window that appears, click "Compress" - Windows will split the disk into two parts. Now right click on the unallocated partition and select "Create Simple Volume …".
Step 3
If the computer is running Windows XP, or earlier versions of this OS, the partitioning of the disk can only be done using third-party programs. Alternatively, you can use the Acronis Disk Director program. Install the program and run it. Right-click on the drive you want to split and select Resize. Right click on the unallocated disk and click "Create Partitions". Set the desired size of the new partition. In order for the changes to take effect, click "Operations" - "Execute". Click "Proceed". Restart your computer if necessary. After rebooting, an additional disk will appear in the system.
