When adjusting the parameters of a personal computer, you must pay attention to the hard disk. The slow operation of the hard drive negatively affects the performance of the PC as a whole.

Instructions
Step 1
You should start configuring hard disk settings before installing the operating system. Select the file system type for each partition on the hard drive. If you are installing Windows XP, then format the system partition to FAT32. Oddly enough, this file system is perfectly suited for constantly overwriting information. This will slightly improve the performance of your computer.
Step 2
After installing the OS, open the "My Computer" menu and go to the properties of any section of the hard drive. Open the "General" tab and find the item "Allow the indexing of the contents of files on this disk." Uncheck the box opposite this item. Click the Apply button and select For All Files and Subdirectories. Confirm the start of the process of changing the parameters of the hard disk.
Step 3
Perform a similar setting for the rest of the hard drive partitions. If you have a separate volume dedicated to storing the operating system image, then it is better to leave its parameters unchanged.
Step 4
Defragment all partitions on your hard drive. If you are working with a relatively new computer, then use standard Windows system tools. Open the properties of any hard disk partition and go to the "Service" tab.
Step 5
Click the Run Defragment button. In the menu that opens, select the required hard disk partition and click the Analyze disk button. After the analysis of the volumes is complete, select the required local disks and click the "Defragment" button. Wait for this procedure to complete. Do not turn off the computer while the utility is running.
Step 6
Return to the Service tab and click the Check Now button. Activate the item "Check and repair bad sectors" and click the "Start" button. Reboot your PC after completing all the above procedures.
