A printer is an external computer peripheral that is used to create paper copies of text and graphics documents. The vast majority of programs used to create, view and edit documents have their own functions for working with a printer, but there are universal rules.

Step 1
Make sure the printer is ready for use before sending your document to print:
- its driver must be installed in the used operating system;
- the printing device must be connected to the computer by cable or through a network connection;
- its power must be turned on;
- the paper tray must be supplied with sheets of paper of the required size in the amount sufficient for printing the document;
- the cartridge (or a set of cartridges if the printer is a color one) must have enough toner (powder, ink or ribbon, depending on the type of printer).
Step 2
Make sure the document is ready to be sent to print. First of all, check if the margins of the document are set correctly. The amount of indentation from the edges of the page affects not only the appearance of the document, but also the number of sheets that will be needed for printing. In addition, margin sizes cannot be zero - their minimum sizes depend on the specific printing device model you are using.
Step 3
Add an open document to the print queue. This operation can be organized in different ways, depending on the program used. For example, in a Microsoft Office 2007 text editor, you can click the large, round Office button or press alt="Image" + "F" to open the main program menu. The necessary commands are placed here in the "Print" section - move the mouse cursor over it or just press the "L" key. Select "Quick Print" to send the document to the printer without any further details.
Step 4
If you want to specify additional print parameters, then use the print dialog instead of "Quick Print". As a rule, in any program it can be started by pressing the CTRL + P keyboard shortcut. In Microsoft Office 2007 this dialog allows you to select a printer (if there is more than one) or to order a print to a file. Here you can also specify the number of copies, select regular or duplex printing, specify a selective list of pages to be printed. It is possible to set the scaling of pages - the printable area can be automatically reduced or enlarged to fit the paper size. You can specify how many pages to fit on each sheet of paper.
