Icons in Windows operating systems are icons that represent folders, files, applications, and shortcuts. Folder icons in Windows 7 can be found on the taskbar, in system explorer windows, in the start menu, and on the desktop. The user can change the folder icons at his own discretion.
Replacing the folder icon
To change the folder icon, open its location on a local or external drive. You can open the folder location using the Windows search system or standard explorer.
To use the standard Windows search system, launch the Start menu and in the Find programs and files search box, enter your query text with the name of the folder you are looking for. Press the Enter key on your keyboard or wait for the operating system to automatically respond to the request. After that, a list with search results will open, which will display all files, folders and applications with the same name or content entered.
In the list that opens, find the line with the name of the required folder and click on it once with the right mouse button. A context menu will appear with a list of basic actions for the selected folder.
In the menu that opens, click on the line "Folder location" once with the left mouse button. After that, a window will open with the location of the selected folder, in which it will be highlighted in blue.
Click on the folder with the right mouse button once. A menu of basic actions over the folder and settings of its display parameters will open.
In the list that opens, click on the "Properties" line once with the left mouse button. The "Properties: NNN" dialog box appears, where "NNN" is the name of the selected folder. This window shows the basic properties of the folder and the settings of many of its parameters, for example, sharing, security, previous versions, display, etc.
In the dialog box with folder properties, click on the "Settings" tab, which contains settings for displaying the folder as a whole, its contents and various components.
On the activated tab, left-click once on the "Change icon …" button (the button is located in the "Folder icons" block). After that, the dialog box "Change icon for folder …" will appear, in the viewing area of which the icons (icons) are displayed, which are available in the standard distribution package of the Windows 7 operating system.
Click the left mouse button once on the icon of the icon you like and press the "Enter" key on the keyboard or the OK button. The folder icon will change to the selected one, and you will not need to restart your computer.

In Windows 7 operating systems, after replacing the standard folder icon, previewing its contents in Explorer windows becomes impossible.
A user of a personal computer running a Windows operating system can also use icons for applications, folders, shortcuts and files that are not included in the standard set. In order to use your icons, download the icon set file in the ".dll" format from the licensed disk of additions and modifications of the Windows operating system or from the Internet. Then in the window "Change the icon for a folder …" click on the button "Browse …" and in the window that opens, find and select the file with the icons of files and folders. After that, click the OK button and select the icon you like for the folder in the icon icon viewer block.
