Local and removable drives installed on the computer are automatically assigned drive letters. If for some reason you need to change the letter of the CD-drive or any other disk, use a special component of the system.

Instructions

Step 1

Computer Management brings together several administrative tools for the Windows operating system. This makes it much easier for the user to access various computer resources, including the ability to correctly change the letter of any disk.

Step 2

There are several ways to invoke the Computer Management component. Press the Windows key or the Start button, select Control Panel from the menu. In the "Performance and Maintenance" category, left-click on the "Administration" icon and select the "Computer Management" shortcut. If the "Control Panel" has a classic look, be guided by the "Administrative Tools" icon.

Step 3

Alternatively, open the Start menu and right-click on the My Computer icon. In the context menu, select the "Control" item by clicking on it with the left mouse button. The same can be done by selecting the item "My Computer" on the desktop. A new dialog box will open.

Step 4

The window that opens is divided into two parts. The left part contains a list of resources available for viewing; it has a tree structure. Information about the selected item is displayed on the right side. In the "Computer Management" section, expand the "Storage Devices" branch and select the "Disk Management" sub-item with the left mouse button.

Step 5

A list of local and removable drives installed on your computer will be displayed. Move the cursor to the line with the name of the CD-drive or to its thumbnail at the bottom of the window and click the left mouse button. After the required disk is selected, open its context menu by right-clicking it and select the "Change drive letter or path to disk" command in it.

Step 6

An additional window will open. Highlight the line with the name of the disk in it and click on the "Change" button. In the new window, select the letter you need using the drop-down list in the "Assign drive letter (A-Z)" field and click the OK button. Apply the changes and close all windows in sequence.
