Any computer or laptop has a hard drive - the main storage location for information. Usually, the available memory is divided into chunks, also called logical drives or partitions. The operating system assigns letters of the English alphabet to these disks, as well as a label-name, they are displayed in the window "My Computer". Sometimes it is convenient to rename a logical drive so that the label matches the information stored on that partition.

Instructions

Step 1

Open the system folder "My Computer". To do this, double-click the left mouse button on the icon on the desktop. If your operating system is Windows 7 or Vista, this icon will simply be labeled “Computer”. A window will open listing your logical drives. By default, sections will be labeled like this: "New volume (C:)".

Step 2

Right-click on the icon of the drive you want to name your own. A context menu for actions and operations appears. Find the line "Properties" in it. Left-click on this item and you will see a window with several tabs. There is no need to switch bookmarks, by default the required section called "General" is launched. At the top of the window, right below the list of bookmarks, you will see a blank line. Alternatively, this line may already contain the name or label of the logical drive.

Step 3

Enter the name you want in the empty field. The use of English and Russian letters, numbers, spaces and some symbols is allowed. The question mark, asterisk, and many other special characters are not appropriate for section titles. It is best not to use any icons in the name. When done, click the Apply button in the lower left corner of the window and then the OK button. This is necessary in order for the system to save and successfully rename the logical drive.

Step 4

Please note that all actions with section labels must be performed under an administrator account. A user with “Guest” rights will not be able to open the properties window of the logical drive at all. If the account has the "User" access level, then when you try to rename the logical drive, a dialog will appear asking for the administrator password. Enter the correct password. Only then can you set a new name for the section. New disk labels do not affect the operation of the operating system or your data in any way, so feel free to rename them as you see fit.
