Not only system administrators or other computer systems maintainers need to manage the size of folders on a computer. It happens that on your home computer you need to make sure that the download folder does not "eat" all the free space on your hard drive. This is especially true for computers that are used by several people.

Instructions

Step 1

This cannot be done using standard Windows tools. Therefore, you will need to use third-party utilities. One of these programs is SpaceGuard SRM, which is a server-side tool and quite complex.

Step 2

Launch your browser and go to the search engine page. Ask to download the SpaceGuard software. Download the installation package and run it. The installation is standard and does not differ from other programs: click Next and Finish.

Step 3

Activate the program from the shortcut on the desktop or from the All Programs menu. A window with a suggestion to configure the utility will open. In its lower left part there is a checkbox Show this screen at startup, uncheck it if you do not want this window to appear every time you start. Select the first item Configure a computer … and click Next. The advanced service settings window will open.

Step 4

Click the "Next" button, the program will offer to select a computer on which the folders will be limited. The next window will offer to create an account for the utility service. Don't change anything, just enter your password instead of the asterisks next to the Password and Confirm Password lines. Finish the setup by clicking on the "Finish" button. The main window of the program will open, in the right part with the title Quota overview for computer: there will be the part of interest to you on managing folder quotas.

Step 5

Right click on the blank space and select Add Quota … Click the Add button at the bottom to add the folder you want to customize. Click Next twice without changing anything to go to the options. Set the desired maximum folder size opposite the Absolute value label and click "Next" several times until the "Finish" button appears. After that, your folder will appear in the list of rules.

Step 6

Right click on the quota you created and select Edit Quota Limits. Call the menu, in which you specify the action when the limit size is reached by pressing the Add button. Click Add again, select the bottom item with the lock and the inscription revoke access and the "OK" button. The settings window for revoking folder access rights will open.

Step 7

Select Specify User or Group and specify a user group or a specific user who will not be able to write data to the directory when the limit is reached. Click "OK" several times to save the changes and close the program windows. In the future, the maximum folder size can be changed through the context menu in the program window.
