The ubiquity of cheap digital camcorders has made it easy for anyone to create private video collections. Modern camcorders provide the ability to record high-quality video up to several hours in length. Such video is pleasant to watch on a personal computer with family or friends. However, long videos tend to be very large. Instructions

Step 1

Open the video file in VirtualDub. In the main menu of the program, select the items "File" and "Open video file …", or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + O. A file selection dialog will appear. Specify the file you want to open in it and click the "Open" button.

Step 2

Set the start of the selection of the video fragment. At the bottom of the application window there is a slider indicating the current frame. This frame can be seen in the preview pane. Move the slider to the first frame of the cutout fragment, and then press the "Home" key, or select the "Edit" and "Set selection start" menu items. The slider can be dragged with the mouse or moved using the buttons at the bottom of the main program window or the "Go" menu commands.

Step 3

Set the end of the video segment selection. Similar to the actions of the previous paragraph, move the slider to the end frame of the video fragment that you want to cut. Click the "End" button, or use the "Edit" and "Set selection end" menu items. The selection appears in the slider area.

Step 4

Set the application to directly copy the video stream. Open the "Video" menu and check the "Direct stream copy" item. In this mode, the video will be copied from the original file without changes.

Step 5

Put the application in direct copying of the audio stream. Open the "Audio" menu and check the "Direct stream copy" checkbox. Now the audio data will not undergo any processing when it is saved.

Step 6

Save the selected video segment to disk. In the "File" menu, select the "Save as AVI…" item. In the dialog that appears, specify the path and name of the file to be saved. Click the "Save" button.

Step 7

Wait for the end of the saving process. The progress of the process can be observed in the VirtualDub Status dialog. If the fragment's data size is large enough, the saving process may take a long time. After saving, the selected file will contain a video fragment cut from the original file on the disk.
