Files with the DLL extension are dynamic link libraries that contain the necessary functions for programs to work in Windows. Of course, to an ordinary user there is practically no use for these files, since only a programmer can understand exactly how to work with them. However, some users may have a desire (or just curiosity) to find out what the objects with this extension hide in themselves.
How do I open files with a DLL extension?
Of course, you are unlikely to be interested in the machine code that is hidden in DLL libraries. Therefore, the various resources that developers of games and other software hide in library files may be of much greater interest. These can be various pictures, musical compositions, as well as texts. In order to "pull out" them, you can use the Restorator program, which can not only extract resources, but also modify them directly in the DLL file.
Opening a DLL file using the Restorator program
Before you start working with DLL files, first of all, you should make sure that you have the necessary access rights, because otherwise you will not be able to save the changes made to the file.
After the Restorator program is installed, just go to the folder with the DLL library and right-click on it, then select "Open with Restorator". When working with a library, in the right column, the directories in which its contents are located will be displayed. To get more detailed information about the resources being viewed, just look at the status bar, which is located at the bottom of the application interface. After examining the contents of the DLL a bit and deciding which resources you need to extract, drag them with the left mouse button held down to the right column.
In the event that you want to replace the resources in the DLL file with your own, you should remember that they must have the same parameters. So, for example, if you want to replace some short sound that is only a couple of seconds long, you should not use pieces of music that are several minutes long. To replace a resource with your own, just drag it from the right side of the explorer to the left.
These are all the main features of the program, they should be enough for the needs of an ordinary user. If you are interested in programming and a more detailed structure of the library, you should use the disassembler, with which you can fully expose the DLL file code. Also, do not forget that this file format can be easily opened with any text editor. But it is highly discouraged to change anything in the DLL content in this way, as it can adversely affect the performance of the operating system.
