Sometimes users of personal computers are faced with the problem of deleting files or folders. Most often, this problem can be solved with the help of a banal system reboot, but you can also come across the opposite case, when you cannot easily delete an unnecessary file.

Instructions
Step 1
When deleting a file in the Windows XP operating system, sometimes the message “The file cannot be deleted because it is busy with an application” appears on the screen. It so happens that the file may not be launched by you at all, but this message will still appear. First of all, you need to check if it is really not running? Some programs that are in the system startup list, and therefore are loaded to work with files, can use them.
Step 2
To check such programs, you need to run the system configuration utility MSConfig. To run it, click the "Start" menu, select "Run". In the window that opens, enter the msconfig command and click the "OK" button.
Step 3
The main window of the program will appear in front of you. Go to the "Startup" tab and check all programs that can run at system startup. For example, programs for working with disk images, as a rule, mount a disk image into a drive at system startup. Also, the reason can be any program that launches any files.
Step 4
If such programs are in the startup list, uncheck the box next to each such program and click the "Apply" button. In the dialog box that appears, select "Restart Now". As a rule, after a reboot, the desired file can be deleted easily and easily.
Step 5
If the above method did not help you, use the small (in size) Unlocker utility. After installing it, it is enough to call the context menu of the file that does not want to be deleted by right-clicking on the icon and selecting the Unlocker item (the image of the magic wand). In the window that opens, this utility will indicate the process that is blocking this file. Now you can either delete the file itself, or close the program that blocked it and repeat the deletion procedure.
