Sending messages over the local network in the Microsoft Windows XP operating system is carried out using the net send console application. In Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows 7 operating systems, the net send command is disabled by default and requires additional software.
Instructions
Step 1
Bring up the OS Windows XP main menu by clicking the "Start" button to perform the necessary preliminary operation to enable the message service and go to the "Control Panel" item.

Expand the "Administration" link and expand the "Services" node.
Step 3
Call the context menu of the "Messaging service" element by right-clicking and selecting the "Properties" item.
Step 4
Go to the "Home" tab of the dialog box that opens and select the "Automatic" option in the drop-down menu of the "Startup type" section.
Step 5
Confirm the application of the selected changes by clicking the OK button or return to the main menu "Start" for an alternative procedure for enabling the required service.
Step 6
Go to Run and enter cmd in the Open box to launch the Command Prompt tool.
Step 7
Confirm the command by clicking OK and enter sc config messenger start = autonet start messenger in the text box of the Windows XP command interpreter.
Step 8
Confirm the wake-up command by pressing the Enter function key and enter net send in the command line text box to send the message over the local network.
Step 9
Use the following command parameters: - username - to define the message recipient account; - * - to select all domain members; - / domain: domain_name - to define the domain name; - / users - to select all users on the server. An example of the full syntax: net send username | * | / domain: domain_name | / users message.
Step 10
Confirm the sending of the message by pressing the softkey labeled Enter.

Use the console utility sent to send messages over a local network in Windows Vista or Windows 7, or download and install the specialized WinSent application to receive messages.
