When the file extension is known, it is easier to identify and understand which program is best to open. In Windows, it is possible to hide the file extension or customize its display. The file format can be made visible in just a few seconds.
Instructions
Step 1
To make the file format visible, open any folder, select "Tools" in the top menu bar. In the drop-down menu, click on the bottom line "Folder Options" with the left mouse button - a new dialog box will open. Also, this dialog box can be called through the control panel. Call the panel through the "Start" menu, click on the "Folder options" icon with the left mouse button. If your panel is categorized, the icon you want will be in the Appearance and Themes section.
Step 2
In the window that opens, go to the "View" tab and select the "Advanced options" section. Using the scroll bar in the proposed list, find the item "Hide extensions for registered file types" and uncheck it. Click the "Apply" button for the new settings to take effect, click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window or the "X" button in the upper right corner to close the properties window.
Step 3
The file icons themselves can tell in which program these files were created, since there are original icons for the registered file types in the system. If the visual display is not enough, move the mouse cursor over the icon and wait for a tooltip with brief information about the file to appear. For example, for a file with a graphic image, you might specify Type: FastStone.
Step 4
If you want to get more detailed information, right-click on the required file, select Properties from the drop-down menu by clicking on it with any mouse button. In the window that opens, the General tab will contain information about the file type and the application with which you can open it. Also on this tab you can see when the file was created and changed, what size it is and in which directory it is located.
