The dll extension stands for dynamic link library. The name explains the purpose of files with such an extension - programs in the process of work from time to time refer to the libraries of resources stored in them (pictures, sounds, functions, etc.). This use also determines the location of dll files - they must be located where the served executable file will look for them.
In order to place the DLL correctly, you need to know which application will use it. Almost all application programs during installation create a separate folder for themselves to store not only the executable file, but also auxiliary ones, including dlls. When you have identified the application that needs the library to be installed to run, find out the address of the root directory of this program on your computer. This can be done, for example, from the application shortcut located on the desktop or in the main menu of the operating system. Clicking on it with the right mouse button, select the "Properties" line.
The full path to the executable file in the properties window is placed in the "Object" field, and the address of the directory only - in the "Working folder" field. You can copy it, paste it into the Explorer window and press Enter to go to the root directory of the application. But you can make it easier - just click the "File Location" button. In this case, another instance of "Explorer" will be launched with the root folder of the required program open in it.
The root directory of complex programs contains more than one subfolder. If you do not see dll files in the main folder, find the one in which they are among the subdirectories - most likely, this is where you should place the new file. If there are too many folders, use the search function - enter the following character set into the search box in the upper right corner of the "Explorer" window: *.dll.
There may be several folders containing dynamic library files in the application root directory. If you cannot determine which one you need, place one instance of the new dll file in each directory. This will not break the executable in any way, but it will save you the hassle of experimenting with each folder separately.
