A file extension is a specific sequence of characters that are a continuation of the file name, but are separated by a period. It is believed that the characters after the dot are called the extension. By default, the Windows operating system hides the ability to view the extension in File Explorer, but this is easy to fix.

Configuring the display of folders in the system
Instructions
Step 1
Every user of the operating system interacts with file extensions every day, but does not even think about it, because they are hidden. For example, a text document of the MS Word editor has the doc extension, graphic files have several extensions (jpg, bmp, gif, etc.), the system configuration files have the ini extension, etc.
Step 2
You can view all registered extensions in the folder display settings. Open any Explorer window or launch the My Computer window. Click the top menu "Tools" and select the command "Folder Options". In the window that opens, go to the "File types" tab. You will see a list of all file extensions that are registered in the system.
Step 3
To display the extensions of the files that you are viewing in the "Explorer", go to the "View" tab of an already open window. Uncheck "Hide extensions for registered file types" and click OK twice.
Step 4
In any Explorer folder, as well as on the desktop, files will be displayed in the file.ras format: where file is the file name and ras is the extension.
Step 5
This method works only in the Windows XP operating system. In the new version of the operating system (Windows Seven), this option is located at a different address. Click the Start menu and type Folder Options in the search bar.
Step 6
There will be two results in the search results, select any of them. Go to the "View" tab and in the "Additional parameters" block uncheck the item "Hide extensions for registered file types". Click OK to close the window.
Step 7
Now, when you change the file extension, a dialog box will appear on the screen with the message "After changing the extension, this file may not be available." If you really want to rename, click the "Yes" button.
