Changing the speed of a video is one of the common techniques used in editing in order to emphasize details, emphasize the intensity of a scene, or simply get a slow motion image of an object moving at high speed. Video speed tools are found in many popular editing software such as Vegas Pro, Canopus Edius, Adobe Premiere, and Adobe After Effects.

Necessary

  • - Adobe After Effects program;
  • - video file.

Instructions

Step 1

The easiest way to slow down a video is to change its speed throughout the clip. If you put a minus in front of the speed change value, the video will be transformed and played in reverse. To work with speed in Adobe After Effects, import the video into the program and drag the clip to the Timeline palette.

Step 2

Right-click on the clip layer and select the Time Stretch option from the Time group from the context menu. To slow down the speed, enter a value greater than one hundred percent in the Stretch Factor field. In fact, this will be the new length of the clip, provided that the previous length is taken as one hundred percent. In Vegas Pro, with a similar change in speed, it is not the length of the clip that is specified, but the acceleration, so to slow down the video speed using this program, you will need to enter a value less than one hundred percent.

Step 3

It is possible to change the video speed between the marked keyframes. In this way, you can smoothly speed up and slow down various parts of the clip without cutting it into pieces. In After Effects, there is a Time Remap option for this, which can be enabled with the Enable Time Remapping command from the same Time group.

Step 4

To change the speed, you need to put the keyframe icons at the end and beginning of the video segment you want to adjust the speed. Set the current frame pointer to the right icon, and in the Time Remap field you will see the timecode of the frame on which the key is located. Change this value to a larger value or move the keyframe icon to the right. In the same way, you can change the speed of the video between the keys placed anywhere else in the clip.

Step 5

For a more correct display of fragments with a changed speed, it is sometimes recommended to enable the Pixel Motion option. This can be done by clicking on the layer and opening the context menu. The required option is in the Frame blending group.

Step 6

The Time Remap option works in a similar way in Adobe Premiere, although in this program you can work with the speed change settings through the Effect Controls palette.
