Basic Input / Output System (abbreviated as BIOS) is a set of microinstructions written into one of the chips on the computer's motherboard. Its main purpose is to check the availability and operability of the main devices necessary for normal functioning (keyboard, monitor, processor, RAM, etc.). Each time it is turned on, this system performs a set of appropriate operations, and then sequentially reads information from the boot sectors of each of the installed disk drives. The order of polling disks can be changed in the BIOS to set the priority for booting the OS from a specific media.

Instructions

Step 1

Enter the settings panel for the basic I / O system. To do this, during the boot process of the computer, you need to press one of the keys. Most often, the Delete or F2 keys are assigned to this operation - the specific option depends on the BIOS version. If using these two options does not work, try to have time to read the message inviting you to press some other button or key combination that flashes on the screen for a second or two while the BIOS is running.

Step 2

Look in the settings panel for a section called Boot - in many versions, it is in this section that the settings for the disk polling sequence are placed. Another possible name for the desired section is Advanced BIOS Settings. The arrow keys are usually used to move through the list of sections, and the Enter key is used to select a highlighted item.

Step 3

Inside the section, look for the lines First Boot Device, Second Boot Device, etc., if you need to change the order of disks of different types - for example, a hard drive and an optical drive. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the desired line and press the plus or minus key to change the value. Sometimes, PageUp and PageDown are used instead of the plus / minus keys.

Step 4

If you need to swap disks of the same type (for example, two hard drives), look in the section for a link to an additional subsection. It can be labeled Hard Disk Drive (for hard drives), CD / DVD Drives (for optical drives), etc. After going to this line, press Enter, and the BIOS will display an additional menu.

Step 5

The additional menu should contain a list of memory devices of the selected type installed in the computer in the order in which they are polled at boot. Changing the position of each line in this list is carried out, as a rule, by pressing the +/- keys.

Step 6

After setting the desired order of disks, exit the control panel with saving the changes. The corresponding command is placed in the Exit section.
