Owners of portable digital devices have long appreciated the benefits and opportunities that open up when using memory cards. As a rule, there are no questions about their operation. At the same time, some designations can be misleading. An example is the root of a memory card.
The origin and meaning of the root of the memory card
Various information in electronic form can be stored on a special device called a memory card. It is designed to store text documents, audio and video recordings, images. The main advantage of this type of memory is the ease of recording information and the compactness of the device along with significant amounts of stored data.
Internal memory is represented by RAM, persistent and cache memory. Its advantages include high-speed performance, and its disadvantage is the limited amount of stored data.
Very often, a modern user of a personal computer and other electronic equipment has to deal with such a proposal: "install in the root of the memory card" or "copy to the root of the card". It can be found anywhere, as modern technology is increasingly beginning to support third-party cards to increase internal memory.
Memory cards are standardized. They have certain overall dimensions and the location of the contact pads, depending on the type of devices for use on which they are intended.
This includes laptops, tablets, smartphones, digital cameras and even PSPs with other game consoles. Therefore, for correct work with them, one cannot do without a clear idea of what the expression "root of a memory card" can mean and where it can be located.
The name of the place for saving data on the card comes from the English word root - "root, root", meaning something primordial, primordial. It came into use at the very beginning, when computers first began to appear. On them, the root was called the very content of the device, that is, the place where the system was started from, and where data could be saved. In fact, this designation has not changed at all with regard to current memory cards.
Root directory
Today the directory itself, which is located on the card, is called the root of the memory card. This is the same folder that launches when you click on the icon with a memory card in a smartphone or netbook. It's just that the word root was translated verbatim, and now its Russian counterpart is used to denote the card itself. Thus, if you are asked to copy data to the root, then you do not need to create anything additional on the memory card, but simply copy the necessary files to it itself, to the root directory.
