Sometimes Windows XP users may need to disable Auto Startup, for example, to conserve computer resources and speed up the startup of the operating system. In the case of a laptop, this can extend the battery life. You can configure various parameters, for example, turn off the automatic activation of programs, a flash card or a disk in the computer drive.

TuneUp Utilities program
Instructions
Step 1
To disable startup programs in Windows XP, click "Start". Then select "All Programs", then - "Standard". In standard programs there is a "Command line", run it. Next, enter the msconfig command. The system configuration settings window will open. Go to the "Startup" tab.
Step 2
You will see a list of programs that are loaded with the operating system. To remove an application from startup, uncheck the box next to it. Thus, disable applications that you do not need. Click OK, then Apply. The system settings window will close. Now the programs you have selected are removed from startup.
Step 3
You can also use the TuneUp Utilities utility to disable startup programs. The advantage of using the app is that it monitors the activity of programs so you can see how often they are being used.
Step 4
Install and run TuneUp Utilities. In the main menu of the utility, select "System Optimization" and "Disable startup programs". You will see a list of startup programs. Each of them has asterisks (from one to five). The more asterisks next to an application, the more often it is used. This way, you can get a better idea of which ones should be disabled. To do this, you need to drag the slider next to the program name to the "Off" position.
Step 5
To disable autoloading of memory cards, flash drives, and disks, type gpedit.msc at the command line. The "Group Policy" window will open, in which left-click on the "Computer Configuration" component. Then click successively "Administrative Templates" - "System" - "Disable Autostart". Now you can disable autoloading of a flash drive or disk.
