To use your desktop computer as a Wi-Fi hotspot, you need to purchase and configure a suitable adapter. This process has many subtleties and pitfalls that must be taken into account.
Instructions
Step 1
Purchase a Wi-Fi adapter with the function of creating a wireless access point. Be sure to check the compatibility of this equipment with new versions of operating systems, because for some devices there are drivers only for Windows XP. Select USB or PCI device.
Step 2
Connect the purchased Wi-Fi adapter to your computer. Install drivers and software for this device. Many Asus wireless adapters are based on a chip from RaLink devices. For these adapters to work with the Windows Seven operating system, download and install the Ralink Wireless Utility. Install this application and restart your computer.
Step 3
Run the RaUI program. Set up your computer's internet connection. Follow this procedure in the usual way without changing any parameters. Right-click on the RaUI utility icon in the system tray and select Soft + AP Mode.
Step 4
In the window that opens, specify an Internet connection to allow network computers to use it to access the network. Now go to the AP menu. In the SSID field, enter the name of your wireless access point. The number shown in the Max Numbers of Peers item means the maximum number of connections. Select the security type by entering it in the Authentication field.
Step 5
Enter the password in the Key Material field, which must be specified to connect to your access point. Click the Apply button. Remember the address of your Wi-Fi adapter specified in the IP Address field. Open the Advanced menu and select 2.4G mode in the Wireless mode field. Click the Apply button.
Step 6
Now open the settings of the laptop's network card. Enter in the fields "Default gateway" and "Preferred DNS server" the value of the IP address of the Wi-Fi adapter. Give your laptop a permanent IP that is different from the computer address with the last digit.
