Pay special attention to the choice of power supply and motherboard. The reliability of these components determines the reliability of the entire server as a whole. They must be of well-known brands and fairly expensive models. Periodically (once every six months) check the condition of the electrolytic capacitors in them - they should not be swollen. Of course, the power supply can be opened for inspection only when it is de-energized, but even in this case, you cannot touch its components, since the filter capacitors at the input retain their charge for a very long time. If you find swollen capacitors, immediately return the corresponding unit for repair. Always keep identical replacement parts on hand so that you can quickly get your server up and running without waiting for repairs to complete. If there is interference in the network that causes the computer to freeze, use a surge protector, and if the voltage in the network periodically disappears, buy an uninterruptible power supply.

Another source of possible unreasonable server freezes is RAM modules. During periodic maintenance, be sure to check them for errors using the Memtest86 + utility. If you find at least one error in the module, replace it. To be able to determine in which of the modules the faulty cell is located, check them one by one, rearranging them with the power supply de-energized.

Computers, unlike TVs, are made in metal cases, so they rarely catch fire. However, vacuuming the server is necessary. Do this at every check-up. Also clean the space under the motherboard, as well as the inside of the power supply (with care). Turn off the machine before processing and use a vacuum cleaner that does not create an electrostatic charge. Removing dust allows you to fight both fires and freezes. Disconnecting the monitor from the network when not in use will also help prevent fire. If the server is controlled remotely via Telnet or VNC, you don't need to connect a monitor to it at all.

Configure the server in such a way as to prevent hacking and effectively resist DDoS attacks. A good solution is to use the OpenBSD operating system - it has the fewest vulnerabilities and, moreover, is not widely used. But remember that even a high-quality and flawlessly working server with correctly configured software will be inaccessible if it is connected to the network through a malfunctioning switch or router. Monitor the smooth operation of this equipment as well.
