Any images obtained by photographing real objects contain distortions due to the curvature of the lenses of the optical system of the photographic equipment. Such defects in images are called distortion (geometric aberration). Distinguish between positive (pincushion) and negative (barrel) distortion. You can remove such distortions in graphic editors. For example, in Adobe Photoshop.

Instructions

Step 1

Load an image containing optical distortion into Adobe Photoshop. In the File section of the main menu, click on the "Open …" item or press Ctrl + O on the keyboard. Select the file in the displayed dialog and click OK.

Step 2

Activate the filter designed to correct optical distortion. From the menu, select Filter, Distort and "Lens Correction …" in sequence. The dialog for setting the parameters of the applied effect will open.

Step 3

Adjust the rendering parameters of the changes you make. Activate the Preview option. The original image will be displayed in the preview window. Activate the Show Grid option. A grid will be displayed, allowing you to control the correct location of vertical and horizontal objects. Click the Zoom Tool button. Click on the image to select a suitable viewing scale.

Step 4

Remove distortion caused by the curvature of the objective lens. Move the Remove Distortion slider. Try to align horizontally and vertically placed objects as much as possible along the grid lines.

Step 5

Correct perspective distortion. Move the Vertical Perspective and Horizontal Perspective sliders or enter values in the corresponding boxes to achieve the desired effect.

Step 6

Remove the distortion caused by tilting the camera when shooting. Grab with the mouse and move the line of the Angle control. Control the result in the preview window. If the angle of inclination of the original image is not large, select the correction value manually by entering it in the corresponding text field. If necessary, repeat steps 4-6 for a more accurate selection of all parameters.

Step 7

Apply a filter to the image. Click OK in the Lens Correction window. Wait until the end of the processing process.

Step 8

Crop the resulting filter. Most likely, it will have transparent pieces along the edges. Activate the Crop Tool. Select the area you want to keep. Click on the button of another tool. Click Crop in the query window.

Step 9

Save the processing result. Use the "Save As …" or "Save for Web & Devices …" item in the File menu. Specify your preferred storage format and data compression options. Additionally, save a copy of the image in PSD format if you intend to further work with it.
