Portable hard drives have appeared relatively recently, but have already become very popular in a short period. Over time, they have become more compact, their capacity has increased. In addition, removable hard drives are very well protected from mechanical damage. Thanks to these advantages, today they are irreplaceable carriers of information.

Instructions

Step 1

Turn on your computer. Wait for the operating system to load. Then connect the external hard drive to the USB port. Please note that you must connect to the USB ports on the back of the system unit. If you connect an external hard drive through the USB ports on the front of the computer or through USB on the keyboard, then it will not have enough power and most likely it will simply not be detected.

Step 2

After connecting the hard drive to the computer, the system of automatic recognition and connection of the device should work. It will automatically install the drivers for the connected device. When it is recognized and the drivers are installed, a dialog box will appear informing you that the device is installed and ready to use. Go to "My Computer". The hard drive will be there.

Step 3

If the system has not automatically connected the device (which also happens, although not often), you can do it manually. To do this, right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select the "Properties" command in the menu that appears. In the next window, click on the "Device Manager" component. A list of devices by type appears. In this list, click on the topmost line with the right mouse button and select "Update hardware configuration" in the context menu that appears.

Step 4

Now find the line "Disk drives". There will be an arrow opposite this line. Click on it with the left mouse button. A list of connected hard drives appears. Select your removable hard drive by right clicking on it. In the menu that appears, select "Properties", after which a window should appear with the inscription "The device is working normally." Then select the "Driver" tab and click "Update" in the window that appears. In the next window, click on the line "Automatic driver update". After that, close all open windows and go to "My Computer". There should be a new device - an external hard drive.
