A byte is the oldest and one of the smallest quantities that measure the amount of information. Only a bit less (eight times). When converting a byte into kilobytes and other units of measurement, it is important to remember that the information measurement system is not decimal, but binary, that is, the word “kilo” in the meaning of “thousand” is rather arbitrary.

Initially, the amount of information equal to 1024 bytes was called “KByte” (read “KByte”). However, over time, the letter acquired the meaning of the Greek root "kilo" - "thousand", since the number 1024 is really almost equal to a thousand.

The number 1024 is relevant for counting bytes in kilobytes in the binary system. Two, three or more kilobytes are the product of 1024 and the corresponding multiplier.

There is also a decimal system for measuring information, which is more understandable to the average computer user. It is often used to describe the capacity of disks, flash cards and other storage media. According to this system, 1 kilobyte is exactly 1000 bytes. In other words, 50 kilobytes is not 51200, but 5000 bytes. Thus, the nominal volume will be more than one kilobyte less than the specified one (since the computer measures information in binary).
