Links are most often called "clickable" words, images and other elements of pages, clicking on which causes the download of documents, the address of which is indicated in the link. However, it is more correct to call them hypertext links or hyperlinks, and simple links in menus and reference materials in Microsoft Word denote pointers to footnotes, bibliography, illustrations, and other elements of this document.

Instructions

Step 1

Start a word processor and load the document where you want to place the hyperlink. Find and select a word, a piece of text, an image, or another element that you want to make a link to an external document or a specific position in an open document. Then, on the Insert tab of the Word menu, locate the Links command group and click the Hyperlink button that is placed there. This will open the dialog box for styling the properties of the link being created. For the same purpose, you can also use the ctrl + k key combination or the "Hyperlink" item in the context menu invoked by right-clicking on the selected text.

Step 2

In the left part of the dialog box, select the tab corresponding to the type of object to which the link should point - a web page, a file, a position in the current document, to the function of creating a new document or e-mail message. Depending on your choice, fill in the required form fields.

Step 3

If you want a frame with some text to pop up when you hover the mouse cursor over the link, click the "Hint" button in the upper right corner of the dialog box. Enter the required text in the form that appears and click the OK button.

Step 4

Click on the "Select frame" button at the right edge of the dialog box if you want to specify how the document that the hyperlink points to should be opened. Select one of the options in the drop-down list - the document can be loaded into a new window, into the same frame that contains this link, or on top of all frames of the current window.

Step 5

Click the OK button when all the required settings are complete. Word will create a hyperlink with the parameters you specified.

Step 6

If you need to place a link to any footnote or bibliography, then use the tools for which a whole tab named "Links" is selected in the menu in Microsoft Word.
