In the Windows operating system, there is a property page for every file and every folder. In addition to the location, size, date of creation of a file or folder, you can view or change their attributes through the properties window. An attribute is a sign of read-only, archiving, indexing, hiding, encryption, and compression use.
Instructions
Step 1
To view and change the attributes of a file in the Windows operating system, open the "Properties" window. To do this, right-click on the icon of the file you need and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu. A new dialog box will open. For a folder, it can be called in another way. Open the folder whose attribute you want to change. Select the "View" item in the top menu bar and select the "Customize Folder View" command.
Step 2
In the dialog box that opens, go to the "General" tab. The file or folder attributes will be at the bottom of the window. As a rule, only two attributes are available at once: "Read-only" and "Hidden". Opposite them are the fields that can be marked with a marker. Remove or put a marker in front of the item you need.
Step 3
If you want to change the attribute of a previously hidden file, first find it. Call the "Search" command through the "Start" button. Enter the file name in the query field and make sure that in the additional parameters there is a marker opposite the item "Search in hidden files and folders". Click on the "Find" button. The icon of the found hidden file in the search window will appear semi-transparent.
Step 4
To set the values for the compression, encryption, archiving and indexing attributes, click the "Advanced" button to open the additional attributes dialog box. Mark the fields you need with a marker and click on the OK button. In the properties window, click on the "Apply" button, close the window.
Step 5
You can also set and unset attributes from the command line using the attrib command. The parameters for the attributes are as follows: + r / -r - set / unset the "Read only" attribute, + a / -a - set / unset the "Archive" attribute, + s / -s - set / unset the "System" attribute and + h / -h - setting / unsetting the "Hidden" attribute.
