Sometimes you need to boot not from your usual hard drive, but from another HDD or external storage device - a disk or USB drive. Often this action is required to reinstall, install, or debug an existing operating system. To choose the device from which your PC will boot, you need to follow a few rules.
Instructions
Step 1
First you need to get into the BIOS. To do this, turn on the PC and before the operating system boot screen is drawn on the screen, hold down the F10, Delete or F2 button. Sometimes you need to hold down other keys or their combinations, depending on the model of your computer. In order not to guess, pay attention to the start screen - it contains a prompt Press XX to enter setup.
Step 2
Once you get into the BIOS panel, find the section responsible for the boot order of devices. In the Award BIOS, it is located in the Advanced Features. Under First Boot Device, put USB-HDD, HDD or CD ROM first. If you need to boot from a USB flash drive or hard drive, the component should also be put first in the Hard Disk Boot Priority subsection of the Advanced Features item.
Step 3
In the AMI BIOS, the required item is called Boot Device Priority and is hidden in the Boot tab. Opposite the line with the inscription 1st Boot Device, you should put a USB flash drive, disk or drive. In a situation with a flash drive and HDD, you will also have to tweak the Hard Disk Drives section, putting the desired device in front of the rest of the components.
Step 4
If you need to boot from a USB drive, be sure to check that this controller is activated. Check Enabled next to its name. You can find the USB control line in the AMI BIOS version in Advanced - USB Configuration, and in Award it will be located inside Integrated Peripherals.
Step 5
After the performed manipulations, you need to save the settings and leave the BIOS (the Save Changes and Exit item or the F10 button). The PC will now reboot and the program will start from the selected media.
