To prevent your own local or wireless network from being hacked, be sure to configure the security settings of your modem (router). To do this, you need to set up multiple levels of authentication.
Instructions
Step 1
Turn on the router and connect a laptop or desktop computer to the LAN or Ethernet channel. Do not connect the internet cable to the router yet. Launch your browser. Go to the web-based interface of the router by entering its IP in the address bar.
Step 2
A window will open containing two fields: login and password. Enter the standard data to access the settings. Some router programs offer to immediately change the initial access data. Be sure to do this. Set a fairly complex password and come up with an interesting username.
Step 3
If this menu does not appear automatically, then open the "Security" item and change the access parameters to the device yourself. If your router does not have access to the Internet, and you have not created a wireless Wi-Fi hotspot, then you can stop there.
Step 4
When creating your own access point for connecting wireless equipment, carefully configure its security settings. First, choose a quality security type. New types of data encryption WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK are recommended.
Step 5
Second, set a strong password to access the network. Ideally, it should be more than fifteen characters long. Use a combination of numbers and Latin letters of different register. Don't be intimidated by the length and complexity of the password. When connecting to the network for the first time, check the box next to the "Connect automatically" function. This will avoid constantly entering a password to connect.
Step 6
Thirdly, when it comes to a home wireless network, i.e. if you do not want to constantly connect new devices to it, go to the web-based interface of the modem. Open the menu responsible for network security settings. Activate the function of checking the MAC addresses of the connected equipment. Enter the addresses of the wireless adapters of your laptops and add them to the list of allowed devices to connect.
